Ubuntu Satanic Edition Released

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

The first version of Ubuntu Satanic Edition, “Evil Edgy” has been released.

Based on Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10, Ubuntu SE isn’t currently a Ubuntu flavor/distribution, so much as a series of themes and changes made to Ubuntu to give it that Satanism vibe.
It’s certainly interesting, and alot more appealing than the pansy Ubuntu Christian Edition, but do you really need to worship the dark lord from your workstation? And how many satanists are actually out there? You’d be suprised. The story gained around 1,000 diggs, a whole 500 more than my List of Feisty Fawn specifications!

Anyway, if your satanist or not, Ubuntu SE is worth a browse purely for the magnificent artwork. And should you choose to return from the firey pits of hell, it can be easily uninstalled.

Let me know what you think!

Ubuntu Posters Available for your Home/Office

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

Jenda, creator of the oh-so-popular Ubuntu system stickers has used the profit he’s made recently to poster-lsupply decorative informational Ubuntu posters for a small price.

The posters are tasteful, and are great for making a boring wall look a little more interesting, as well as informing any readers of the Ubuntu operating system and it’s purpose.

The Highway Of Freedom is now open for Everyone. The posters are available by default in batches of 10 for just $25, but you can contact Jenda if you need a smaller/larger amount. Currently there are 400 posters available, but profits made may go to creating more if they’re a big success.

Click here, for more information, a larger image or to purchase your poster(s).

Current Desktop

Hi,

Long time since my last post, so I thought I’d post up a couple of desktop screenshots.

My wallpaper now varies randomly throughout the day, (thanks to DoctorMO) so I’ve just included a few of my favorite wallpapers in the screenshots.

New Desktop, Major Changes!

As you can see, I’ve removed the top bar, and shrunk things down a little.

The bottom is transparent, and looks alot nicer than before.

As the “show desktop” button and the “wastebasket” button had to be removed from the panel, I put a wastebasket icon on the desktop, and set my previously useless Windows Key to trigger the desktop.

Kubuntu 6.06 Experience

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

Today a Kubuntu CD came in the post for me (yay!) and I’ve just been running it on my system via. the Live CD.

It’s fast. Very fast. Even running from the CD it was nice to use, and I was changing wallpapers without any lag. Speedwise I couldn’t compare to Ubuntu, as the CD speeds are similar, and I didn’t actually install Kubuntu.

I wouldn’t use it as a primary OS just yet, as I have *alot* more experience with GNOME, but maybe in the future I could consider it.

This is the OS, as it would boot from a fresh install:

This is the OS running a standard transparent Konsole/Terminal:

This is the beginning of the installation, at language selection:

And this is the OS once I’d shrunk the bar down to a size I liked:

It’s certainly a fairly good looking OS, even before customization, I even took some wallpapers off the CD for use in Ubuntu.   ;)

Kubuntu 6.10 is set to look even better, so I may try that once it’s released in it’s final state on the 26th of October.

Not only does Release Candidate 1 mark Eft’s coming out of Beta, it marks next week’s arival of the final release.

For more information on the release, see Official Edgy Release Notes or read the post below.

To upgrade from Dapper Drake to Edgy Eft Release Candidate 1, simply hold Alt, tap F2 and type/paste:

gksudo “update-manager -c -d”

The “-c” tells the update manager to immeadiatley check for updates, and the “-d” tells it to look for non-final releases too. The manager will notify you of RC1 and give you the change to GUI upgrade. :)

Edgy Eft only a week away, Feisty Fawn announced.

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Only one week to the Edgy Eft final release date!

Release candidate 1 is set to be released tomorrow, and it’ll have one week of bug fixes and alot of development meetings I hope to attend, before the final release date on October 26th.

Basically Edgy has GNOME 2.16, a new faster smoother Upstart init redone bootup sequence, a nicer default theme, a generally smoother finish, updates for all included applications, the latest linux kernel and faster shutdown performance, which will hopefully see me shutting down in less than 5 seconds. (Currently takes around 10 ;))

As for Feisty Fawn, Mark Shuttleworth himself described the fawn (in an email to the development announce team) as “a young deer that sets out to explore a world that is new and exciting - seeing the world through eyes unprejudiced by what has gone before.” (Sorry, has to laugh here, when was the last time you Windows users got an email from Bill Gates himself? Never? Oh right, thought so)

He also mentioned that we can expect alot more features and improvements available to the immeadiate end user, which is brilliant news.

Keep up the good work, team!

Are Apple planning an iTunes for Linux?

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

…To answer your other question, at this time Apple has no plans to release a version of iTunes for Linux.

Thank you for being an iTunes customer. We appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

No. :(

And why is she thanking me for being an iTunes customer? With the information she’s given me it doesn’t look like I’ll be using iTunes for a while…

Day 2 of Fresh Ubuntu

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Getting settled back to the way I was before my ubuntu fresh install. Got amaroK all set up, along with a new FTP and MSN Messenger client. So yeah, all good so far, very few problems (printer doesn’t work, and thanks to Lexmark probably never will) I’ll have forgotten about Windows in no time! Well, apart from iTunes, I already have really forgotten about Windows. I lost some music on that partition, and iTunes is (so far) the only way I can play my purchased and encrypted music… Anyway, new day, new desktop:

Ubuntu = Primary OS

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

At last.     :)

I’ve been talking about it for ages, and I’ve finally done it. Ubuntu is the only OS on my main computer. It was an unexpected transition, and some things were lost, but the important thing is I’ve done it, and it’s looking great.
